Capitol Conservation Day 2019:
Tell your story: join One Hundred Miles, the Georgia Water Coalition, and your fellow coastal advocates on February 20th as we travel to the Statehouse in Atlanta for Capitol Conservation Day. During the bus ride from Savannah, we will provide training and talking points to help you become an effective advocate. Once there, you will have the opportunity to meet our state legislators and ask them to protect the coast we love. Bring your fellow members and other friends with you to support environmental and conservation efforts. Last year we had over 200 attendees in the Capitol. Let’s make this year even better!
If you can’t join us at the Capitol in February, you can still make your voice heard by making an online contribution to support our work. During our legislative campaign, every gift will be matched dollar-for-dollar up to $5,000!
Legislation Covered This Year
Coal ash dumping fees– last year the fees to dump trash at a landfill were raised from $1.00 to $2.50, that is for all waste except toxic coal ash. This toxic material is a waste product of coal burning, and Georgia is becoming one of the cheapest places to dump this waste across the Southeast. Don’t let our state become a dumping ground!
Offshore Drilling Resolutions– The Trump Administration has brought seismic testing and offshore drilling back to the table. Our coast is vulnerable to oil and gas exploration and drilling, but we can send a clear message to this Administration by passing a Georgia resolution opposing offshore oil exploration and drilling.
Oyster Mariculture Act – The potential for a sustainable, successful oyster farming industry in Georgia is real, but currently it isn’t legal. Lets work together to make this industry a reality for Georgia.
Shore Protection Act– Our beaches and sand dunes offer habitat, storm protection, and priceless views. When we build too close to our beaches we Jeopardize these resources and put ourselves in harms way. Join our efforts to pass reasonable and logical legislation to protect our coastal resources and communities.
